Walkers, Canes, Wheelchairs, Scooters, and Medicare

Walkers, Canes, Wheelchairs, Scooters, and Medicare

Medicare Part B is a tricky beast when it comes to durable medical equipment, and especially mobility equipment. Oftentimes, purchasing this equipment instead of trying to bill your Medicare is easier, less expensive, and gets you the equipment you actually need instead of just what your insurance will cover. That is why MI MED has chosen to sell these products at retail to our customers. We offer excellent service, free labor on our equipment, and affordable prices. We will happily price match if we don’t have the best price (but not from Amazon or Walmart.) See below to read more about Medicare policy on mobility products.

Medicare policy on mobility products requires that that Medicare funds are only used to pay for:

  •  Mobility needs for daily activities within the home. This means that they consider equipment needed to leave the home above and beyond what they are willing to cover.
  • The lowest level of equipment required to accomplish these tasks.
  • The most medically appropriate equipment (that meets your needs, not conveniences).

Medicare requires that your physician or healthcare provider and supplier evaluate your needs and expected use of the mobility product to determine on which item you will qualify.

They must determine the lowest level of equipment to help you be mobile within your home and accomplish daily activities by asking the following questions:

  • Will a cane or crutches allow you to perform these activities in the home?
  • If not, will a walker allow you to accomplish these activities in the home?
  • If not, is there any type of manual wheelchair that will allow you to accomplish these activities in the home?
  • If not, will a scooter allow you to accomplish these activities in the home?
  • If not, will a power chair allow you to accomplish these activities in the home?

After all this, the Medicare-covered item may not fit your needs, and if your needs are to leave the home, then Medicare won't even consider it for you. Call or visit MI MED to learn about more options and browse our mobility equipment here.
